My wife would take a 30 minute drive (one way) to Bolivia to buy eggs at $5.50/dozen. We knew it was quite expensive but thought, what the heck, this way we can get some what we thought were organic eggs and at the same time support a local farm, why not. After she had become a regular customer, she would come by again to get eggs and some other stuff, but this time the owner lady did not allow my wife to get 5 dozen of eggs, saying that they did not have enough eggs and that they would only allow to buy 2 dozen at the time. What??? I am spending an hour on the road to buy these expensive eggs and you tell me that I can only get 2 dozen? I'd like to mention that the owner was quite rude at this time, not that she would be the most polite and friendly person the other times, and to top things off, she offered ORGANIC eggs instead for $6.50 a dozen. So lady, you are telling me that I have been buying NON organic eggs for 5.50 here for the past few months, and still treating me like I was bothering you by wanting to buy 5 dozen at this price? We have never met with a worse customer service in our lives, and still do not understand how they manage to stay in business. The meat prices just like the eggs are at least twice as much as other places. Lastly, very important fact about this store is that they do not have a consistent supply of fresh foods on hand. You never know if they are going to have what you are coming for in stock that day. Whether it is meat, eggs, or bakery, you just have to take a gamble every time you decide to go there.

I visited the farm for the first time today and really enjoyed everything about it. The welcoming staff and comforting surroundings make you feel right at home, but don't let that mislead you to thinking this is a small operation. The sandwiches and salads are made with ingredients from the farm, on fresh baked breads, but leave room for dessert. There's homemade ice cream and cookies and cakes and pies and a selection that inspires you to bring a box of goodies home. Don't leave without taking a look at their gift store featuring local artisans. And grab a loaf of the carrot raisin bread on your way out the door!

Heather and Henry Berkert, their family members, staff and volunteers have created a wonderful, organic farm. It's a joy to enter the farm, visit the store/bakery, enjoy lunch or homemade ice cream, shop for unique gifts, vegetables or organic meats... and visit the petting zoo. The animals in the zoo have all been rescued. They seem to appreciate the love and care they receive; they are very affectionate with visitors, children and adults alike. Where else could we pat a llama, miniature donkey, tiny black piglet, 2 adolescent goats, horses, pigs, baby chicks, enable our children to ride a pony and more?

My husband Jim and I also ate a lovely 5-course dinner at the "Homestead" on the farm last Friday evening. The menu consisted of appetizers, main course and dessert from the farm and included wines chosen specifically for each course. A gourmet chef prepared the meal.

Heather, Henry and their daughter Maude were very gracious hosts. We began the evening with wine and appetizers on the front lawn replete with lovely flower gardens and hydrangea bushes. Then Henry took us on a tour of the farm including the barn. The only experience we missed was a hayride due to light rain. We then continued behind the homestead and into a courtyard setting with more beautiful flowers and lovely pool.

We ate our meal on a huge screened back porch with several other couples. A long table was set with plates and silverware reminiscent of years past and large containers of sunflowers from the garden. At sunset, numerous candles burned in mason jars creating a soft, warm effect. The setting and conversation were delightful. And in one corner of the porch, folk musician, Herb Harton, quietly sang, played guitar and banjo for us.

Towards the end of the evening, Henry and Heather shared with us their fascinating background, professional training and experience as horticulturalists and landscape architects. We had the opportunity to ask them questions as well. They are truly an exceptional, gracious, extremely hard-working family committed to organic, full-circle homestead farming.

Jim and I came away with a better understanding and appreciation of what homestead farming entails. It was a magical evening....it topped dining experiences we've had in the U.S....and around the world.
